    Risk Management

Homeowners with a wood-burning fireplace or solid fuel stove or insert can protect your property and your family by having a qualified professional inspect and clean your chimney at least annually. Maintaining a chimney through an annual inspection and cleaning is critical, especially as winter approaches and temperatures drop.

It takes only minutes for a fire to escalate. Even with the responding fire department’s prompt arrival, a home could be destroyed. To help avoid this, have your home fitted with a residential sprinkler system.

There are two basic categories of water shut-off systems: whole-house systems and point-of-use systems. While both can prevent water damage, generally only a whole-house system qualifies for a premium credit on your homeowner insurance.

Water damage is one of the most common types of claims reported. Ranging from toilet leaks to a sump pump losing power, these claims are costly and messy. However, there are ways to help reduce the chance of experiencing a loss:

    • Install a water shut-off system to detect unusual flow rates in your plumbing system and automatically turn off the water main to your home.
    • Purchase a battery back-up system on your sump pump to avoid costly losses during a power outage. Should you lose electricity during a storm, these systems will kick on, allowing your sump pump to continue to expel water.
    • Keep your thermostat on to at least 60 degrees, even if you are away from home. This will help keep your house warm and reduce the risk of frozen pipes.

In the event you have a water leak, turn off the water main supply and contact your plumber right away.
